Bluefin Tuna Fetches Unprecedented Price of 3.2 million dollars at Japanese Capital Auction
A bulky Pacific bluefin tuna created waves at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, garnering a historic bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2 million; £2.4m) during the venue's opening auction of the calendar year.
The winning offer for the 243-kilogram fish came from the parent firm of a popular sushi chain, which runs outlets across the country and overseas.
"The year's tuna signals fortune," stated the company president, a notable participant at the yearly January sale.
Known as the King of Tuna, this entrepreneur is noted for submitting substantial bids for bluefin tuna at these auspicious January auctions.
Bidding Shock and Record-Setting Precedent
After the auction, the successful bidder told reporters that he was "surprised at the winning bid," adding, "I believed we would be able to acquire it a little for less, but the price soared before you knew it."
This latest acquisition tops his own notable purchases:
- He secured a tuna for 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
- He bid 155 million yen in 2013.
- In 2019, he purchased a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1 million).
Despite previously remarking that he thought he "did too much," he has now proceeded to surpass his personal record another time.
A Tradition of High Prices
The opening auction at the Tokyo fish market is traditionally known for sky-high prices. The previous year, the initial tuna was bought for 207 million yen by a separate food company, which stated the fish would be served at its restaurants across Japan.
The frenetic energy at the fish market during these pre-sunrise auctions has become a popular tourist attraction in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which began around 05:00 local time, was equally bustling.
Immediate Consumption
The extremely valuable tuna was shortly thereafter processed for patrons at the entrepreneur's sushi establishments shortly after the auction was finished.
"I believe like I've commenced the year in a auspicious way after eating something so fortune-bringing as the year begins," said one satisfied customer.
