British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, pinpointed through surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a several approach shafts providing entry to the site... initial indications suggest the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as Daesh - imposed jihadist rule over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation demonstrates our UK leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

UK warplanes have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of IS after its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank all the members of our armed forces involved in this strike for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey said. "They were among numerous UK service members on duty over the holidays. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, shows how British military are ready to step up, all year round, ensuring Britain's security at home and strong abroad."

In December, the US military conducted what it described as a "major assault" targeting Daesh sites in the country, following an assault killed two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates IS still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
