El Kaabi's Stunning Strike Secures Morocco's Win Over the Coelacanths in Afcon First Game.
The Morocco shook off a nervy beginning to defeat Comoros in the tournament's opening game on Sunday, with goals from the Real Madrid attacker and super-sub El Kaabi in the latter period.
It was a less than dominant showing, though, from the heavily tipped Moroccans, who are ranked 97 places above the small island nation in the world rankings and were forced to work tirelessly for the three points in rainy conditions at Rabat's Prince Moulay Abdellah stadium.
Nervy Beginning and Missed Chances
The hosts failed to convert an early spot-kick and were goalless at half-time despite dominating possession, eventually breaking the deadlock in the 55th minute.
It came when full-back Mazraoui showed great skill to keep the ball in play before laying it across for Díaz to calmly pass into the net.
“The opening game is always difficult but we came good in the second half,” said Morocco coach Walid Regragui.
The Substitute's Piece of Magic
The tension was subsequently extinguished by a piece of sheer individual brilliance from Ayoub El Kaabi. Only ten minutes after his introduction, the forward connected with a cross with a acrobatic bicycle kick in the 74th minute, making it two and sealing the win.
Earlier in the match, the hosts might have taken ahead in the 11th minute when a spot-kick was awarded for a challenge on Díaz. Yet, Soufiane Rahimi effort was saved by Comoros goalkeeper Pandor.
The Visitors' Defiant Stand and Second-Half Chance
Comoros stoutly defended against Morocco for long periods until the hosts' superior firepower eventually told.
Shot-stopper Yannick Pandor made several further fine saves to limit the scoreline as the match progressed, even though his team did have a clear opportunity for an equaliser shortly after Díaz's goal, with Saïd firing straight at keeper Yassine Bounou.
Fitness Concern for Hosts
The three points was partially marred by an injury to Morocco's captain, Saïss, who was forced off in the first half in some distress.
The centre-back had just made his comeback to the international setup recently after a lengthy layoff caused by ankle surgery.
This result continues Morocco's historic run of consecutive victories to 19, surpassing the old best of 15 set by Spain between 2008 and 2009.
