The US central bank reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.
Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve
The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Shifts
In a announcement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement reads. “Price increases has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job
The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.
Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve typically analyzes labor statistics to assess employment trends, including the count of new jobs created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in the previous month.
The number of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.
Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Slowdown
Though BLS was set to publish September’s employment data in early October, it suspended its publication once the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, which he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase
Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that costs are rising, albeit slowly. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
