Right-leaning responses to the partial disclosure of documents related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with certain supporters of the previous administration pointing out the noticeable presence of former President Clinton and other Democrats in images, while different voices expressed frustration over how heavy redactions cast former President Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable manner.
Administration Justifies Redactions with Strong Rhetoric
Justice Department officials justified the heavily censored sections with fervent hyperbole. “Never in American history has a President or the Department of Justice been this transparent with the public about such a delicate legal issue,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page letter outlining the redaction procedure.
Concerns Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's identity and image appear in some of the materials, the extensive redactions prompt serious concerns about what may be concealed behind them. Some Republicans swiftly called for increased openness.
“People are furious and walking away,” wrote Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the redactions violate the law, and suggested that a future Congress may attempt to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, today’s document release grossly does not comply with both the spirit and the letter of the act,” he continued.
A Faction of Rightwing Figures Swing Behind the Release
However, a segment of rightwing commentators and former President loyalists came out strongly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The disclosed materials—from a justice department led by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes scores of documents that are entirely censored, and numerous of the individuals depicted in pictures have their identities obscured.
Yet a few do not, featuring prominent individuals like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, allowed some rightwing figures to go on the offensive.
“This is pretty ironic how the political left wrongly claimed Donald Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to release documents that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” stated right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a female that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one explanation Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Former President Spokesperson Releases Statement
Bill Clinton has consistently said he knew of no illegal activity by Epstein and has not been alleged to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The White House hasn’t been hiding those files for months only to release them late on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“This is about shielding themselves from what comes next, or from information they will try and hide permanently. So they can release as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photographs as they want, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the response concluded.
Overall Rightwing Comment Seems Muted
Nonetheless, overall discourse on the right was relatively muted following the release, especially when compared with the loud demands for action that preceded the congressional approval to pass a bill mandating the files' release.
Loomer, who recently accepted media access at the Defense Department, had been one of the most vocal advocates for a full disclosure. In February, she chastised the administration generally and Bondi in particular after a group of rightwing influencers were given hard-copy binders of materials that included no previously unseen information.
