Canada's skeleton athletes were cleared of charges that they deliberately manipulated a qualifying event for the upcoming Games, which allegedly denied competitors from other nations a chance to qualify.

US skeleton veteran a five-time Olympian alleged the team from Canada of pulling four of its six entered athletes from a race in Lake Placid. She claimed this reduced the field, making a lower points pool available. Although she took first place, Uhlaender did not secure her qualifying position for the 2026 Olympics.

“Existing federation regulations allow member nations to pull competitors from competition at any time,” stated the International Bobsleigh & Skeleton Federation (IBSF).

Following an investigation, the federation stated it would not impose sanctions, dismissing the complaints as no rules were broken of its code.

Canada's Explanation

Reacting to the claims, the Canadian federation defended the decision, pointing to athlete welfare and the need for rest. They stated that some athletes had already raced multiple times that week and the decision was “correct, transparent and in keeping with both their well-being and the sport's fairness.”

Representatives of several affected nations had voiced “deep worry” about the selection system's integrity.

For Katie Uhlaender, the 2026 Olympics are planned to be her last Olympic appearance. While she can still qualify, the likely US team spots are projected for other athletes. Uhlaender is a 2012 world gold medalist whose best Games result was just off the podium in Sochi 2014.
