US Attack on Venezuela Stokes Concerns of Potential Danish Territory Takeover.

The latest American bombardment in the South American nation and the seizure of its president have sparked worry regarding America's ambitions on Greenland. Supporters of the former president's base have allegedly turned their attention to the strategically important landmass in the wake of the operations in the southern hemisphere.

Inflammatory Messages and Diplomatic Backlash

Merely hours following the initiation of the Caracas operation, a well-known right-wing podcaster, who is the spouse of a high-ranking presidential adviser, posted a symbolic map. The graphic depicted Greenland draped with the stars and stripes, with the cryptic caption: "SOON."

This blatant suggestion to claim the resource-abundant region, which is a part of the North Atlantic alliance, provoked swift and strong condemnation from Danish officials.

"We are strong partners and should keep work together as such. US security is equally Greenland’s and Denmark’s security," stated the Danish ambassador to the United States. "Our nation and the United States collaborate to ensure security in the North."

The diplomat further highlighted that the kingdom had significantly boosted its defence spending recently, earmarking a large sum specifically for Northern and regional defence. "Furthermore, we demand complete recognition for the territorial integrity of the our realm," he emphasized.

Political Appointments and Strategic Interests

The situation were further exacerbated by the previous appointment of a Southern governor as a representative to Greenland. The appointee had openly expressed gratitude to the commander-in-chief, stating it was an "privilege" to serve in a unpaid role to "bring Greenland into the US."

Following the military action in Venezuela, this envoy commended the president's actions, linking it to the broader "fight against narcotics."

Ever since returning to office, the American leader has consistently alarmed European partners with his expressed desire in Greenland. The island is viewed as critically strategic for defence and future mineral exploitation. It already houses the northernmost US military base.

Refusing to Rule Out Force

In a significant television interview, the president refused to exclude the resorting to military force to acquire Greenland. This position comes amid intensifying global rivalry in the polar region. "I don't rule it out. I don't say I'm going to do it, but I don't rule out anything... We need Greenland very badly," he stated.

He characterized Greenland as having a "tiny amount of people, which we’ll take care of, and we’ll cherish them... But we need that for international security."

Growing Friction and Indigenous Resistance

In response to this constant "rhetoric" of intent, Denmark's intelligence service took the unprecedented step last month of classifying the United States as a "potential threat."

The prime ministers of both Greenland issued a joint and stern rebuke: "We have said it very clearly before. Now we say it again... You cannot annex other countries."

Public opinion in Greenland reveals a complex picture. While a overwhelming percentage of the island's inhabitants seek independence from Copenhagen, there is simultaneously little to no appetite to become part of the United States. The island has had the option to declare independence for many years.

Analyst View: A Plausible Threat?

Some analysts are increasingly reconsidering the likelihood of such a move. One thinktank director focusing in defence conceded she had previously dismissed the rhetoric but was "now not so sure."

"Logistically, it would be feasible for the US to station a couple hundred or a couple thousand troops inside of Greenland, and it's not clear to me which power could do anything about it," she concluded.
